Jamshedpur is located in Jharkhand at the confluence of the Swarna Rekha (Subarnarekha) and Kharkai rivers. The Subarnarekha flows from west to southeast and is joined by the Kharkai at Domuhani. Jamshedpur was founded by Jamsetji Tata as India's first planned industrial city and relies on these rivers for drinking water and industrial use. Hazaribagh, Deoghar, and Giridih do not have this river confluence.
