The nucleus contains both protons and neutrons, collectively called nucleons. Protons and neutrons each have a mass of approximately 1 atomic mass unit. Electrons have a mass about 1/1836 of a proton. The nucleus, composed of multiple nucleons, has a much greater combined mass than any individual subatomic particle.
