The Indian steel industry has developed largely in the latter half of the 20th century. The first large modern steel plant was established at Jamshedpur in 1907. It was followed by establishment of plants at Hirapur, Burnpur, Bhadrawati, Rourkela, Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur, Salem, Vijaynagar and Vishakhapatnam.
