The Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) was established in 1907 at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. It was India's first private sector steel plant, beginning pig iron production in 1911 and steel in 1912. Jamshedpur was selected due to its proximity to iron ore, coal, and manganese deposits. TISCO was part of the Tata Group and marked Jamshedpur as India's first planned industrial city. No earlier private steel plants were recorded in Koderma, Dhanbad, or Ramgarh.
