Maithon Dam is in Dhanbad district, Jharkhand, on the Barakar River. It was built by the Damodar Valley Corporation. The dam is about 48 km from Dhanbad city and near the Jharkhand-West Bengal border. It is 15,712 feet long and 165 feet high. It houses South East Asia’s first underground hydel power station with a generation capacity of 60,000 kW. The reservoir covers an area of 65 square kilometers.
