Gumla district is situated in the south-west part of Jharkhand. It lies on the southern Chota Nagpur Plateau along the state's south-west border. The district was formed from Ranchi in 1983 and covers an area of 5,327 sq km. Its coordinates range between 22°35' to 23°33' N latitude and 84°40' to 85°01' E longitude, aligning with a southwestern position relative to Ranchi.
