The first Elephant Reserve Centre in India was established in 2001 in East Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. It is known as the Singhbhum Elephant Reserve. The reserve covers 13,440 square kilometers and includes Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. Project Elephant was launched in 1992 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. It aims to protect elephants, their habitats, and migration corridors to mitigate human-elephant conflicts.
