Notes: The first paper mill in India was established in 1832 at Serampore in Hooghly district, West Bengal. It was set up by John Clark Marshman using advanced mechanized techniques for that period. The mill was short-lived due to insufficient market demand for paper at the time. The next prominent paper mill, the Royal Bengal Paper Mills, started operations in 1870 at Ballygunge, Kolkata.
