The Safahod movement began in 1870 as a non-violent tribal reform among Santhals in Jharkhand's Chota Nagpur. It was led by Lal Hembrom and aimed at social purification, monotheism, and resisting exploitation by landlords and British authorities. The movement addressed issues following the 1855 Santhal Rebellion, particularly excessive rents and cultural erosion. It is distinct from the Kherwar movement, which started in 1868 under Bhagirath Manjhi.
