Mahatma Gandhi led Satyagraha activities in Jharkhand, then part of Bihar, in 1917 during the Champaran Satyagraha. He visited Ranchi multiple times in 1917 and met Lieutenant Governor Edward Albert Gait to plan the movement against indigo cultivation oppression. Gandhi was accompanied by Kasturba and Devdas Gandhi and stayed with Shyam Krishna Sahay during his visits. This event was Gandhi's first significant political campaign in India.
