During the Mughal period, the Jharkhand region, especially Chota Nagpur, was known as Kukra or Khukhra. In 1585 AD, Mughal Emperor Akbar defeated the Nagvanshi king Madhu Singh and imposed an annual revenue of 6,000 rupees on the region. The area was famous for diamond production from the Sankh River. The name Kukra is cited in the Akbarnama, differentiating it from later names such as Jharkhand or Santhal Desh.
