To sow seeds of contention between Shivaji and Sultan of Bijapur
The Treaty of Purandar (1665) required Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to fight for Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, cede 23 forts and territory worth 4 lakh hons, and sent his son Sambhaji as a political hostage. Shivaji retained 12 forts and territory worth 1 lakh hons, acknowledging his sovereignty.
