Dhule served as the district headquarters of Khandesh under British India. Khandesh covered present-day Jalgaon, Dhule, and Nandurbar in Maharashtra before its division in 1906 into East (Jalgaon) and West (Dhule) Khandesh. Prior, its capitals included Burhanpur under Mughal rule.
