Birsa Munda was born in 1875 in Ulihatu, Jharkhand. His family converted to Christianity, and he adopted the baptized name Daud Munda. The name Daud was used during his early childhood and education at a German mission school. Birsa is also known as Daud Birsa or Daud Purty in historical accounts. The adoption of this name corresponds with his upbringing before leading the Ulgulan movement.
