Jharkhand became the 28th state of India on 15 November 2000. It was formed by carving out southern districts from Bihar. The Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000 led to its creation. The Lok Sabha passed this act on 2 August 2000 and the Rajya Sabha on 11 August 2000. The act received Presidential assent on 28 August 2000. Prior to Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh was the 26th state and Uttarakhand the 27th state, formed in 2000 as well.
