The Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, is a country in West Africa. It is the smallest country within mainland Africa and is surrounded by Senegal, which is the only country that shares a land border with the Gambia, except for its western coast on the Atlantic Ocean. Banjul is the Gambian capital and the country's largest metropolitan area. English is the official language of the Gambia. Other languages are Mandinka, Wolof, Fula, Serer, Krio, Jola and other indigenous vernacular. The dalasi is the currency of the Gambia that was adopted in 1971.
