The western or higher Ranchi plateau is called the Pat region locally. It is part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau's highest step. The elevated lands, known as pats, reach 910-1,070 meters with a peak at 1,164 meters. These lava-capped mesas are characteristic of the western Chotanagpur Highlands. Ranchi Plateau averages 700 meters and is distinct from Hazaribagh (northern plateau), Palamu (lower plateau), and Koderma (lower eastern plateau).
