Ranchi became the capital of Jharkhand when the state was formed on November 15, 2000. Before statehood, it was the summer capital of Bihar. Ranchi is located on the Chota Nagpur Plateau and houses the state assembly and Raj Bhavan. Other cities like Jamshedpur are known for industry, and Bokaro and Dhanbad are major steel and coal centers, respectively. Dumka serves as a sub-capital in Jharkhand.
