Q. The song 'Amar Sonar Bangla' written during the Swadeshi Movement of India inspired the liberation struggle of Bangladesh. Who wrote this song? (UPSC Prelims 2007)
Answer: Rabindranath Tagore
Notes: 'Amar Sonar Bangla' (meaning 'My Golden Bengal') was composed by Rabindranath Tagore, the renowned Bengali polymath. The song was created in 1905 in response to the partition of Bengal announced by British Viceroy Lord Curzon on 20 July 1905, which took effect on 16 October. It was first sung on 25 August 1905 at an essay reading session in Kolkata's Town Hall. The melody was derived from Baul singer Gagan Harkara's composition "Ami Kothay Pabo Tare." Tagore composed this song as part of the Swadeshi movement to rekindle Bengali unity and raise consciousness against the communal political divide. Later, the first ten lines of this song were officially adopted as Bangladesh's national anthem on 13 January 1972, following the country's independence in 1971.
