Recently, eight Birhor families in Chatra district, Jharkhand received permanent houses under the Abua Awas Yojana. Abua Awas Yojana is Jharkhand’s state housing scheme that provides free pucca houses with three rooms, a kitchen and a bathroom to homeless and left-out families. The scheme covers households that did not get benefits from PM-Awas or any other earlier housing programmes. The Birhor are a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in Jharkhand traditionally dependent on forest-based livelihoods like rope-making and minor forest produce.
