Koyna Hydroelectric Project
Koyna Hydroelectric Project is the largest completed hydroelectric power plant in India, situated in the Satara district of Maharashtra. The project utilizes the waters of the Koyna River, a tributary of the Krishna, and consists of four stages of power generation with a total installed capacity of 1,960 MW. Often referred to as the "Lifeline of Maharashtra" due to its massive electricity generation, the project also facilitates irrigation in the neighboring areas of Western Maharashtra. The dam forms the Shivsagar Lake, a reservoir approximately 50 km in length, and is notable for having withstood a major earthquake in 1967.
