Sher Shah Suri, the founder of the Sur Empire in North India, defeated Mughal emperor Humayun in the Battle of Chausa in June 1539. He defeated Humayun again in 1540 after which the Mughal emperor became a fugitive. Sher Shah overthrew the government of the Emperor Humayun in 1540, and ruled instead until his death in 1545.
