The government is expanding public Wi-Fi through the PM-WANI scheme. The Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface scheme aims to boost broadband access via public Wi-Fi networks across India. As of February 2026, 4,09,403 Public Data Offices (PDOs), 207 Public Data Office Aggregators (PDOAs), and 113 App Providers are operational. States like Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh lead in hotspot deployment. Around 2.44 crore users accessed PM-WANI, consuming about 58.64 petabytes of data. The scheme follows a decentralised, market-driven model encouraging local entrepreneurs to set up Wi-Fi hotspots.
