Dairy development and milk production
Operation Flood was launched on 13 January 1970. It was the world’s largest dairy development program conducted by the National Dairy Development Board. It turned India into the largest milk producer globally, surpassing the United States in 1998. The program established a national milk grid, encouraged the formation of village milk producers' cooperatives, and increased per capita milk availability.
