Kavirajamarga was composed during the reign of Rashtrakuta king Amoghavarsha I in the 9th century. It is attributed to the court poet Srivijaya, with Amoghavarsha I also contributing. He promoted Kannada literature and culture. Pulakeshin II and Vikramaditya VI were Chalukya rulers, while Krishnadevaraya belonged to the Vijayanagara Empire, unrelated to Kavirajamarga.
