Indian People's Theater Association was formed by the communist party. In the Hindi belt, it is known as the Bharatiya Jana Natya Sangham, in Assam and West Bengal, the Bharatiya Gana Natya Sangham (Gana Sanskriti Sangham) and in Andhra Pradesh the Praja Natya Mandali. IPTA's mission statement is 'People's Theater Stars the People'. Logo/logo drummer (Nagar Vadak), designed by renowned painter Chitta Prasad, is reminiscent of one of the oldest means of communication. IPTA was established nationally on May 25, 1943, in Bombay (now Mumbai). The Government of India issued commemorative postage stamps on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee in 1993.
