Mahatma Gandhi returned to India, landing at Apollo Bunder (permitted by the British as a special case) in Mumbai on 9 January 1915 to a hero’s welcome. He was honored at a magnificent reception in the palatial house of Jahangir Bomanji Petit (1879–1946), a philanthropist, and owner of Petit Mills, and Chairman of Bombay Mill Owners Association. The British Government of India too honored him—Gandhi received ‘Kaiser-I-Hind’ gold medal in the King’s birthday honours list of 1915.
