The Chauri Chaura incident took place on February 5, 1922, in the Gorakhpur district of British India. During the non-cooperation movement, a group of protestors clashed with police and as a result of this, policemen opened fired on the protestors. Provoked by this shooting incident, the demonstrators burnt down a police station, killing all its occupants. Mahatma Gandhi called off the ‘Non-cooperation Movement’ after the incident.
