Jharkhand was formed on 15 November 2000 with 18 districts from south Bihar. Subsequently, 6 new districts were created by reorganizing existing ones: Latehar (2001 from Palamu), Saraikela Kharsawan, Jamtara, Pakur, Khunti, and Ramgarh (2007), raising the total to 24 districts. No further districts have been added after 2007 as of 2024.
