Jharkhand has one national park: Betla National Park, located in Latehar and Palamu districts. It was notified in 1986 and covers 231.67 sq km. Betla forms the core area of Palamau Tiger Reserve, which is part of Project Tiger since 1974. The park preserves sal-bamboo forests, North Koel River area, and wildlife including tigers, elephants, gaur, and wolves. Other wildlife sanctuaries like Palamau and Hazaribagh are not national parks.
