Godda district was formed from Santhal Pargana district on May 25, 1983. It was previously part of undivided Santhal Pargana until the 1981 census. Santhal Pargana itself was created after the 1855 Santhal rebellion. After Jharkhand state was formed in 2000, Godda became its 18th district. Godda district contains 9 blocks and 2304 villages within its boundaries.
