Giridih district was created on December 4, 1972, by separating it from Hazaribagh district when the area was part of Bihar. Giridih city became the district headquarters. Jharkhand state was formed later in 2000. Some parts of Giridih district were separated to form Bokaro district in the 1990s. The creation of Giridih district is recorded in state government notifications and historical records related to Bihar and Jharkhand administrative divisions.
