Jizya was abolished by Akbar in 1564 and 1579, but re-imposed by Aurangzeb in 1679 to strengthen Islamic orthodoxy. His reign included temple destruction and Sharia law enforcement. Revenue from Jizya funded mosques and madrasas. Aurangzeb's policies sparked resistance, notably the rise of the Maratha Empire under Shivaji.
