Damodar Valley, known as the Ruhr of India, contains about 75% of India's coal deposits. It is the primary region for coal mining by Coal India subsidiaries such as CCL, BCCL, and ECL. These mines supply approximately 91% of India's coal consumption. The valley supports many thermal power plants and steel industries, including the Bokaro Steel Plant. Although the area has some iron and mica deposits, coal is the dominant mineral resource. Uranium and asbestos are found in other parts of Jharkhand, not specifically in Damodar Valley.
