Damin-i-Koh was created in 1832 by the British East India Company in Jharkhand's Rajmahal hills for Santhal settlement. It provided direct land leases at low rents to Santhals who migrated from Birbhum and Chhotanagpur. The Santhal population increased from about 3,000 in 1838 to 83,000 by 1851. Originally inhabited by Paharias, this region later became known as Santhal Parganas after the 1855 rebellion. The name Damin-i-Koh means "skirts of the hills" in Persian.
