Bakhtiyar Khilji was formally appointed the governor of Bengal by Mohammad Ghori and thus he became the first ruler of Khilji Dynasty of Bengal and first Muslim dynasty to rule Bengal. Bakhtiyar Khilji inaugurated Muslim rule in Bengal by conquering Nadia in early 1205 AD. Bakhtiyar Khilji was born and raised in Garmsir, Helmand in present-day southern Afghanistan. He was a member of the Khalaj tribe, which is of Turkic origin and after settling in south-eastern Afghanistan for more than 200 years, eventually forming the Ghilji tribe.
