The sanctuary is located in the northern Western Ghats across Pune, Thane, and Raigad districts of Maharashtra. It is named after Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.MBhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1985.
