The Bethune School was founded in Calcutta in 1849 CE. It was founded as ‘Calcutta Female School’ by John Elliot Bethune with the financial support of Dakshinaranjan Mukherjee.It later became a college in 1879 CE. It was the first fruit of the powerful movement for women's education that arose in the 1840's and 1850's. As a secretary to the Bethune School, Vidyasagar was one of the pioneers of higher education for women.
