Col. Edward Tuite Dalton
Daltonganj, in Palamu district of Jharkhand, is named after Col. Edward Tuite Dalton. He was Commissioner of Chota Nagpur in 1861 and the first Deputy Commissioner of Palamu district. Dalton was an Irish anthropologist during the British Raj (1815–1880). The name "Daltonganj" combines "Dalton" and the Hindi word "ganj" meaning town or market. The city was renamed Medininagar in 2004 but still keeps Daltonganj as the railway station name.
