What is Kelvin wave?

A Kelvin wave is a wave in the ocean or atmosphere that balances the Earth’s Coriolis force against a topographic boundary such as a coastline, or a wave guide such as the equator.  It develops in almost a rectangular area of the sea (e.g., the English Channel), wherein the tidal range increases on the right of the direction of the progressive wave and decreases on the left direction.
