Factors responsible for the location of Paper Industry in India

Paper is manufacture in two stages:

  1. Pulp is extracted from cellulose rich raw material
  2. Pulp is pressed into paper

The industries catering to the first stage exist in areas rich in raw material like near forests . The second stages are in urban areas having huge market . paper manufacturing started in Bengal due to availability of coal , water and huge urban market . Salbai grass from the terai regions of UP and Bihar was used as raw material. Later paper mills were setup in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh using bamboo from deciduous forests as raw material. Today paper mills in Haryana and Punjab import Salbai grass from terai to manufacture paper .Paper mills in Kalyan (Mumbai) manufacture very high quality paper utilizing imported coniferous pulp from Canada as a raw material.
