President attends tribal congregation ‘Vanvasi Samagam’ in Sonbhadra (UP)

President Ramnath Kovind on March 14, 2021 addressed the tribal congregation Vanvasi Samagam in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. The President visited Chapki area in Babhani Block of Sonbhadra district where he attended the Vanvasi Samagam as Chief guest and inaugurated the newly constructed building of Seva Kunj Ashram.

Govt. reconstitutes panel for studying Sarasvati river

The Centre has reconstituted an advisory committee to chalk out a plan for studying the mythical Sarasvati river for the next two years, after the earlier panel’s term ended in 2019. The Archaeological Survey of India on March 10 issued a notification for “reconstitution of the Advisory Committee for the Multidisciplinary Study of the River Sarasvati”. The ASI had first set up the committee on December 28, 2017 for a period of two years. The committee would continue to be chaired by Union Culture Minister Prahlad Singh Patel.

Education: OTPRMS certificates linked with DigiLocker, registration fees waived

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ announced that in order to ensure hassle free access to verified Online Teacher Pupil Registration Management System (OTPRMS) Certificates, the Ministry of Education has decided to link the certificates with DigiLocker. The issued certificates will automatically be transferred to DigiLocker. The Minister also informed that the registration fee of Rs. 200/-, payable for obtaining OTPRMS Certificates, issued by NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) has been waived off.

Finance Ministry asks SEBI to withdraw new rules on perpetual bonds

Finance Ministry has written to the capital market regulator SEBI to withdraw the rule to treat all Perpetual Bonds as 100-year tenor. Perpetual bonds are quasi debt instruments without any fixed maturity. The risk lies in the event if the issuer sinks. Like in case of YES Bank, it becomes nearly impossible to find buyers for such bonds. Redemption becomes unlikely. Debt mutual fund managers believe SEBI’s new rules will make debt mutual funds more transparent and safer.

New scheme announced for tourist vehicle operators

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced a new scheme, under which any tourist vehicle operator may apply for an “All India Tourist Authorization or Permit” through online mode. It will be issued, after relevant documents are submitted and fees deposited, within 30 days of submission of such applications. The permits will be granted for 3 months or multiples thereof, upto 3 years. The “All India Tourist Vehicles Authorization and Permit Rules, 2021” were published on March 10, 2021. The new rules will be applicable from 01 April 2021.

Indian envoy in Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay visits Northern and Eastern Provinces

Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay held talks with senior Tamil leaders during his visit to the Northern and Eastern Provinces and emphasised that achieving the legitimate aspirations of the minority Tamil community through meaningful devolution within a united Sri Lanka will contribute to peace, inclusive progress and strength of the island nation.

INS Jalashwa arrives in Comoros with 1000 metric tonnes of rice

Indian Navy Ship Jalashwa on March 14, 2021 arrived at port of Anjouan in Comoros with one thousand metric tonnes of rice. Ambassador of India to Comoros Abhay K. said that the arrival of Indian Navy Ship Jalashwa highlights the continuity in the exemplary ties between India and Comoros within the framework of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for all in the Indian Ocean Region).

India win 2nd T20 International at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad

India beat England by seven wickets in the second T20 International at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 14, 2021 to level the five-match series. India made 166/3 in 17.5 overs. This was after the bowlers restricted England to 164 for six in 20 overs.

Virat Kohli becomes first cricketer to score 3,000 runs in T-20 International matches

India skipper Virat Kohli has become the first-ever batsman to score 3,000 runs in T-20 International cricket. Kohli achieved the milestone in his 87th T20I match against England at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 14, 2021. New Zealand’s Martin Guptill is second on the list of leading run-getters in T20I cricket, having scored 2,839 runs in 99 matches.

Mithali Raj becomes first woman cricketer to complete 7,000 ODI runs

Veteran batter Mithali Raj on March 14, 2021 added another feather to her cap by becoming the first player to complete 7,000 runs in women’s ODI cricket. The Indian skipper reached the 7,000-run milestone in her 213th match, which was the fourth ODI of the ongoing five-match series against South Africa at Lucknow.

Mumbai (315/4) beat UP (312/4) to win Vijay Hazare (50-over) title

When needed the most, the mighty Mumbai’s batting came good and blew away Uttar Pradesh by chasing down the target of 313 runs with six wickets and 51 deliveries to spare. The reward for this power-hitting display was a fourth Vijay Hazare (50-over) title, at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in New Delhi on March 14, 2021. Karan Sharma was the captain of UP while Mumbai were led by Prithvi Shah.

Bhavani Devi scripts history, becomes first Indian fencer to qualify for Olympics

India’s international sabre fencer Bhavani Devi has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics starting July 23 by virtue of improving her world ranking to 42, confirmed the Fencing Association of India. The 27-year-old from Chennai is the first Indian fencer ever to make the cut for the Olympics. She qualified for the Games at the Budapest World Cup, an Olympic qualifying competition, on March 14, 2021.

Former middleweight world boxing champion Marvin Hagler of US dies at 66

Former undisputed middleweight world boxing champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler died at the age of 66 on March 13, 2021. The American dominated the middleweight division from 1979 until his controversial defeat by Sugar Ray Leonard in April 1987. Hagler fought 67 times during his 14-year professional career, winning 62. He triumphed on 52 occasions by knockout, while he drew two and lost just three times. Hagler made 12 successful title defences until his defeat by Sugar Ray Leonard by a split decision.
