100-Year Starship Study of Darpa
Darpa, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, is best known as a Government agency in United States which helped invent the internet. The first hypertext system and an important precursor to the contemporary ubiquitous graphical user interface was an invention of Darpa only.
This organization had now recently come up with a plan to begin studying what it would take — organizationally, technically, sociologically and ethically — to send humans to another star, a challenge of such magnitude that the study alone could take a hundred years. This Darpa-Nasa effort called the 100-Year Starship Study. The study will begin with roughly $500,000 in seed money and the grant is planned to be awarded on November 11, 2011 i.e. 11/11/11.
