Crop production in India

In 1951-52 India's total food grain production was 51 million tonnes. In 2007-08 total food grain production was 230.8 million tons.

  • Since independence India's food grain production has increased by 4.5 times.
  • National target for food grains production was fixed at 239.10 million tonnes for the year 2009-10.

However, as per the fourth advance estimates of crop productions released in July 2010, total food grain production in 2009-10 is likely to be 218.2 million ton. The following table summarizes the data.

  • Total food grains production in India has increased by 4.5 times since first five year plan
  • Among wheat and rice, production of wheat has increased to 13 folds. This is because of green revolution which was mainly confined to wheat.
  • The increase in production is also due to increase in the irrgable land so actual increase in real terms has been less than the above data.
