Notes: It is probably the oldest theatrical tradition, which is still practiced today. Parts of Karnataka and Kerala. It originated in the royal court held by the Vijayanagara Empire and a certain society called Jakkula Vara. In fact, it is mostly a detailed dance drama composed by a single artist. Subsequent forms adopted more variations and became a distinct dance play. It was largely influenced by the Vaishnava devotional movement.
