Notes: Delhi was formally inaugurated as the capital of British India by Viceroy and Governor-General of India, Lord Irwin, on February 13, 1931. Emperor of India, George V, had laid the foundation stone of Delhi on December 12, 1911. Before it was shifted, the Viceroy of India was Lord Hardinge, who said in a letter that the Great Britain should move its empire capital from Calcutta to Delhi.
