Notes: Ashoka's Hell was designed by Girika, an executioner, at Pataliputra. The torture palace reflected Buddhist conceptions of hell and inspired Ashoka’s later renunciation of violence after the intervention of monk Samudra. Xuanzang and Faxian recorded its legend; Agam Kuan well is associated with its site.
