Notes: Devanampiya Tissa made Buddhism as the state religion of Sri Lanka. He was converted to Buddhism by Mahinda who was a Buddhist missionary and son of Ashoka. As per the Buddhist chronicle known as the Mahavamsa, Buddhism became associated with Sri Lanka’s kingship when Devanampiya Tissa became Buddhist.
