Notes: Raja Rammohan Roy has come to be called the ‘Maker of Modern India’. He was the main force behind introduction of the western education and English language in India. He advocated the study of English, Science, Western Medicine and Technology. He spent his money on a college to promote these studies. He was the founder of the Brahmo Samaj and a great leader of social reform. It was as a result of his persistent campaign that the custom of Sati was declared illegal in Bengal in 1829 A.D. By Lord William Bentick. He was the chief advocate of the modern process of education and the scientific learning.
