Notes: According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, there are four ways in which Indian citizenship can be acquired: birth, descent, registration and naturalisation. The provisions are listed under sections 3 (birth), 4 (descent), 5(1) (registration), 5(4) (registration) and 6 (naturalization) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. If the sections are taken in consideration, then there are five ways.
